Coal and Fli mbaoo. To Cbarlea Fisher, esq Secretary of the Row an Agricultural Society. Sir? Fossil Coal is ao little mcd, or even known, in this state, that probably many of our inhabitants will need to be toM, that we rtfer ua combostibie sub stance, found in the interior i>f the earth, and existing there in sue h abundant e, as to furnrah to most old and populous countries the greatest part of their fuel. This substance is of such value to Eng land, that without it she would be ut terly unable to carry on her manufactu ring operations: indeed wi hout it, she Could hardly supply hersi If with fuel l<>r the wrdin?ry put posts cf life. The following facts will show both l-ow abun dantly coal exists in nature, atid what vast use is made ? f it in certain coun tries. One ol the greatest coal forma tions know:-, is that of New-Castle 111 the north of Holland. This has already been woikrd for severa: hundred years, and still it is estimated, tb.,t the lotma 'ion contains enough to last 1 0? ? yr.irs longer, a. though not less thai. 72. OuO 000 bushels are carried fioin it ain.u.iy. London alone require* (or In r monthly ^uop y 2,376.000 buslietsl (Aouais o t philosophy 4, 4 I 1 .) Owing to ihc abundant resources for fuel afford* d by our interminable lot ests, the United Slates have no. hi herto em ployed Fossil C'.al, except on a very limited scale. Hut the fort-Ms e mnrao d within the older states, arc by no means inexhaustible; every year they aie bo* - ii)|? before ihc axe, and already ha* e out more populous dis ricts b?Ku,) tt? fr? l the scarcity and expensivrntss ot fuel. As our country becomes more it.irk'y settled, and our foie>ts more extei.sivc ly cleared, a resort to subterranean svp pl;es for fuel will evety day become more and more common. In several plices already, where large mani.fa< lu ring establishments heve made great de sti uction of the surrounding I rests, coal ha* bffme indispensable 10 their pro gress. In the most populous parts of the L'ni'ed States, it daily becomes more at d more irnpor-ant to prcseve the tim ber from deMi u< tion; and the time is bv no means distant, w hen most ot the fires that are lighted in the oldest sec ions of our rout: ry, wi I be fed fioin the stores that now lie lor the most part undisturb ed below the surface. 11- nee we infer thit coat it defined tc become, at no ve ry dinar t r*uy, i m article m much grt at cr demand in our country than it m at firctent; that o u h states as contain it in ahu. d.nre wrhin themselves, it will be a ve ry Valuable possession, and. when their own w sn's are soppli? d, may afT>rd the mratit of a lucrative commerce in supplying the wants of those states, wmrh do not contain it. We may cite the sister state of Viginia lor an exam ple of the commencement of this troffic, whic h is, in our view, to become even tually so important. Among those states whirh will be so fortunate as to imhrace a full supply of this article within their own territory, the state of No th Carolina will undoubt edly be one; nor will this privilege be smull, although she has displayed little but cold indifference, while a limited geological research has added to her native riche , apparently ample beds of this mineral., and has traced out a region extending not less than a hundred mile* from north to south, through the very centre of the state, where one of firso beds is found, and where numerous oth er beds may be looked for, with the greatest probability ol success ? the whole being, without doubt, a continua tion of those rich beds of coal, that lie on the borders of the James river. But methiiks I hear some one say, " Of what usk are these beds of coal to ut? Are not our forests sufficient to supply us with fuel? And is it not easier to cut down our trees to feed our firet, than to delve for fuel in the dark unwholesome caverns of the earth? ? And although these beds are said to occur in the vici nity of two of our largest rivers, yet those rivers arc not navigable, and we cannot send the articles to foreign mar kets." Poor narrow-minded policy! that can see nothing valuable in the richest gilts of Heaven, unless they can|be all enjoyed by itself, although thrj be
